Exquisite Swiss cuisine at Chesa (Hong Kong)

We were not in Hong Kong for long, so we asked for recommendations to the best the island has to offer. A friend immediately offered Chesa, a Swiss restaurant tucked away inside the grand Peninsula Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, a popular “bets kept secret” dining option for Hong Kong’s rich and famous.

Being in the Peninsula, you know Chesa is not going to be a cheap meal. Chesa can set you back around HK$500 (AU$75) per person or more, though there is also a rather affordable lunch set for HK$350 (about AU$50) each. Not bad for a restaurant of this kind.

It is also important to note that they have a smart casual dress code, meaning no open-toe footwear or plastic shoes, and sleeveless shirts for men, who must also wear long trousers after 6:30pm.

Chesa‘s signature dish is its cheese fondue, where you get a massive pot of cheese for you to dip an assortment of goodies in. Think chocolate fondue, but with cheese. It was a tempting option, but since we were planning on a lot of eating throughout the day, we decided against it as it did seem quite heavy.

In the end, we went with a 3-course meal each, comprising house bread, a starter, a main course and dessert, plus some petits fours.

The starters were phenomenal. We got a salad with quail, which had a lot of flavoursome quail made to perfection and a little bit of greens to make it a “salad.” I can’t quite remember the other starter except that it was extremely cheesy and awesome. I think it’s the sliced raclette, which is essentially slices of melted cheese. Yum.

Since we didn’t get the cheese fondue, we looked through the menu and asked for recommendations for the mains. A lot of them seemed a little too risky for my liking so we went with safe options such as the roasted duck breast and a good old schnitzel. The duck was very good, but not the best I’ve had (a little chewy, if I remember correctly), but the schnitzel was about as good as you could get. The tartar sauce and the side potatoes were phenomenal and went with it perfectly.

Last but not least, the desserts and the petits fours. The photos are pretty self-explanatory, but I will assure you that they tasted as good as they look. Phenomenal stuff, especially the lemon tart.

I have been to Switzerland and I didn’t have anything as good there as I did at Chesa (though to be fair that’s probably my fault). I can definitely see why it is such a popular place — great location, wonderful ambiance, terrific service, and of course, amazing food. If I get the chance I’d love to go back.
