Usually a Michelin Star means a restaurant has been given a free licence to charge prices through the roof because people are going to go anyway.
Not Tim Ho Wan (which literally means “Add Good Luck” in Chinese), which is well known for being one of, if not the cheapest Michelin Star awarded restaurant in the world.
Tasty and cheap? Well, we just had to check it out.

Tim Ho Wan has one Michelin Star and sells dim sums, or what we call in Australia yum cha food. After our lacklustre breakfast at the Australia Dairy Co in Tsim Sha Tsui, we walked up along the map to the restaurant. Rumour has it Tim Ho Wan gets filled up early and you could wait in line for more than 2 hours.
We spotted the crowd outside the plain looking exterior as soon as we turned the corner. The inside was already packed, and we had to grab a number. The lady told us to come back in about an hour. That’s fine, plenty of shopping around.
We checked out some electronics in the nearby streets and came back exactly an hour later. As soon as we wedged our way into the crowd, the lady came out and called our number! Perfect timing.
Inside, the restaurant was very crowded and very busy. We were jammed into the seats by the door, right next to the cash register. A chubby lady (I assume the boss?) was chatting away on the phone. We filled out the order form and handed it right to her. A couple of seconds later she dumped the printed receipt on our table. This was an efficient place.
We ended up ordering like 6 things to share between 2 people (we didn’t even come close to finishing it all), and the total bill came down to like 70 HK dollars. That’s just a tad over AU$10.
Everything was of excellent quality, as good as some of the best yum cha I’ve had anywhere in the world. The standout had to be the fried BBQ pork buns. The pork inside was succulent and juicy, the sauce was sweet and flavoursome, and the crispy skin was like munching into a perfect biscuit.
Check out the photos below.
The service is efficient but not exactly friendly and the place is a little squashy. Can’t complain about the food and the prices though.
8.5 out of 10!
